When you first bring a crystal home, it has likely passed through many hands, mined, cut, polished, shipped, handled in a shop, and placed on a display. Cleansing clears that accumulated energy and gives you a fresh starting point to set your own intention. It is also important ongoing maintenance for any crystal you use regularly in energy work.

1. Moonlight

Moonlight is the most widely used and universally safe cleansing method. Place your crystals on a windowsill or outside on the night of a full moon, or on any night with visible moonlight, and collect them in the morning. No stone is harmed by moonlight.

The full moon is traditionally considered the most potent night for this, but any moonlit night works. You do not need a specific phase if you are simply maintaining your collection rather than working with a particular intention.

2. Running Water

Cool running water is an effective and immediate cleansing method for most quartz-family stones. Hold your crystal under flowing water (a natural stream is ideal, but a tap works fine) for thirty seconds to a minute while visualizing accumulated energy washing away.

Do not use water on: Selenite, halite, angelite, malachite, pyrite, turquoise, labradorite (in prolonged exposure), or any stone with a Mohs hardness below 5. Water can dissolve, rust, or irreversibly damage these stones.

3. Selenite

Selenite is considered self-cleansing and is widely used to cleanse other crystals. Simply place your stones on a selenite slab or alongside a selenite wand and leave them overnight. This is the most effortless method and is safe for virtually every stone in your collection.

If you are building a crystal practice and want a low-maintenance cleansing approach, a selenite slab is one of the most useful investments you can make. Read more in the selenite meaning post.

4. Sound

Sound cleansing works by using vibration to shake loose accumulated energy from the crystal’s structure. A singing bowl, tuning fork, bell, or even a clear tone played through a speaker can be effective.

Hold or place the crystal near the sound source and allow the vibration to wash over it for one to two minutes. This method is safe for all stones, including those that cannot be used with water or sunlight. It is also one of the fastest methods, particularly useful for large collections.

5. Smoke and Smudging

Passing a crystal through the smoke of burning herbs (traditionally sage, cedar, palo santo, or mugwort) is a cleansing method with roots in many indigenous traditions. Move the crystal through the smoke intentionally, rotating it to cover all sides, for about thirty seconds.

Approach smudging with awareness of its cultural context and, if possible, source your smudging materials sustainably and from suppliers who work respectfully with these traditions.

6. Earth Burial

Burying a crystal in the earth overnight (or for up to three days) returns it to the source that formed it. Wrap the stone in a natural-fiber cloth or place it in a small paper bag before burying so you can find it again, and mark the spot.

Earth burial is particularly effective for very heavy, dense stones like black tourmaline, obsidian, and hematite, which absorb significant amounts of energy. After retrieval, rinse the stone with water (if safe) and allow it to dry fully.

7. Sunlight

Brief exposure to direct sunlight can cleanse and re-energize many crystals. A few hours in morning sunlight are generally sufficient.

Do not use sunlight on: Amethyst, rose quartz, citrine, fluorite, or any stone with a vivid color, as UV exposure can fade them over time. Sunlight is most appropriate for clear quartz, black tourmaline, tiger’s eye, and similarly robust stones.

8. Breath and Visualization

Holding a crystal in both hands and breathing consciously onto it while visualizing white or golden light clearing the stone is a simple, immediate method that requires nothing but your own presence and intention. This is most effective for small stones you work with personally rather than large display pieces.

Exhale slowly and deliberately onto the stone three to six times while clearly visualizing it becoming lighter and brighter. Then set your new intention.

After Cleansing

Once a stone is cleansed, take a moment to set a fresh intention before you use it again. Hold it, close your eyes, and clearly state what you want it to support. This transforms the cleanse from mere maintenance into an active reset.

If you want to learn how to go a step further and actively charge your crystals with specific intentions, the how to charge crystals post covers that process in detail. You can also explore the crystals for beginners guide for a foundational overview of which stones to start with.

Cleansing is an act of care. It takes a few minutes and makes the whole practice feel more intentional and alive.

Frequently asked questions

Why do crystals need to be cleansed?

Crystals used in energy work are believed to absorb and accumulate energy from their environment and from the people who handle them. Cleansing clears this accumulated energy so the stone can work with fresh intention.

How often should I cleanse my crystals?

It depends on how actively you work with them. Crystals used daily for protective or healing work benefit from weekly cleansing. Display pieces or crystals used occasionally can be cleansed monthly or whenever they feel heavy or dull.

Can all crystals be cleansed with water?

No. Water-soluble minerals like selenite, halite, and malachite should never be immersed in water. Porous stones like turquoise and malachite can also be damaged. Check your specific stone before using water.

What is the easiest way to cleanse crystals?

Selenite is the most effortless method. Placing your crystals on a selenite slab overnight requires no active effort and is safe for virtually any stone. Moonlight is another low-effort option that works beautifully for most crystals.
