A full moon can be a useful point in the month to pause. Some people make tea, light a candle, and write for an hour. Others sit at the kitchen table for ten minutes after dinner. Both count.

The point is to notice what has become visible. A feeling you kept putting aside may have a shape now. A plan may have reached the point where it needs a decision. Writing helps separate a passing mood from something that needs your attention.

Start with what is already true

Begin with a few plain questions. Do not try to make the answers poetic.

  • What has taken up most of my energy since the last full moon?
  • What went better than I expected?
  • What feels unfinished because I am avoiding a choice?
  • Where have I been harder on myself than the situation deserves?

Read back what you wrote. A repeated name, task, or worry is often more useful than a dramatic insight.

Prompts for release

Release does not mean pretending that a difficult thing never happened. It can mean deciding you no longer need to rehearse the same argument in your head.

  • What am I carrying out of habit?
  • What expectation belongs to someone else, not to me?
  • What would change if I stopped waiting for perfect certainty?
  • Which small resentment needs a boundary, a conversation, or less of my attention?

If one answer feels tender, end the session there. You do not need to solve every issue in one sitting.

Prompts for the month ahead

The full moon is also a good time to choose one modest adjustment.

  • What needs more room in my calendar?
  • What needs less room?
  • What support would make the next two weeks easier?
  • What is one action I can take before the next new moon?

Keep the action specific. “Reply to my sister” is easier to carry out than “repair the relationship.”

Frequently asked questions

When should I journal during a full moon?

The evening of the full moon works well, though the day before or after is also fine. Pick a quiet moment when you can write without rushing.

Do full moon journal prompts have to be spiritual?

No. They can be practical. Use the moon as a recurring date to review your habits, relationships, work, or mood.
